Since in India, the request of examination can be placed till 48 months from the date of application under the Indian Patent Act, 1970. I would like to know if that graph could show the minimum to maximum time period of granting such a patent in the respective jurisdiction.

Re: Characteristics Of Good R&D Leaders From Al Chase

John,

It was a privilege brainstorming with you about these important issues. I love that! John, thank you SO much! I loudly applaud you for taking the ball and running with it! As I personally continue to digest today's #innochat, I left feeling somewhat weighted trying to address something SO large as to influencing future landscapes, for innovation to thrive. In the end, my feeling was that there are SO many pieces to this puzzle, that it takes time to unravel, and address. My personal hope, that surfaced as we finished today, was the idea that perhaps people would feel inspired to take on pieces of the puzzle... and YOU, have just done that... within record time! For this, I applaud you, and I am grateful. I would think talking Patent Procedures is certainly part of the puzzle... Let's see what the keepers of #innochat have to say! Big thanks to you John for taking initiative!

Re: R&D Project Manager Skills – #innochat

Thanks for your comment Kiran.

Managing to the result is the core of Newlogic’s approach to innovation. Instead of relying on serendipity to provide an R&D team with a breakthrough (which may, or may not support the business strategy), we've found time and time again our clients succeed best when R&D leaders manage innovation such that it is aligned with business strategy and collaborates across different business functions.

This is thought leadership originally developed in the 1990's (and published as 3rd Gen R&D by Harvard Press). As Newlogic, we have evolved these tools (POPS, PICM & 3d IP) with our work with global innovation leaders.

As you suggest, a big part of R&D leadership success is communication. At the core our processes help R&D leadership translate their company's "big picture" business strategy into an actionable R&D strategy comprised of project selections, consumer insights and technology breakthroughs. Aligning innovation and strategy is more than a factual, analytical, process; we feel that to do it well requires tools, methods and outputs that facilitate communication and collaboration.

Re: R&D Project Manager Skills – #innochat

This is a very interesting topic.

I think the challenge for project management in R&D environment is mostly on planning the 'means' than planning the 'result'. The very nature of R&D brings a bit of unpredictability onto the table.

In my opinion, it is not easy to schedule innovation by timeline or hours of the day. Most of the innovation coming out of R&D environments is driven both by patience as well as impulsion. This is what, in my view, makes it interesting and challenging for a project manager in R&D.

I read somewhere that if your project is not suffering from organization politics, then it is of great importance in the company. So, connecting to the business strategy and to a sponsor in the management team, is also a way of cutting through organizational challenges.

Practically, any project management technique ultimates defines itself as communication. In R&D scenario, I feel this is a much stronger need. As a project manager you better work on making things visible, having the project team confront themselves with reality while all the interested parties have some clue of whats happening.

I personally like agile techniques like Scrum, Lean software development for the same reason, making things visible.

Team mates in R&D scenario tend to like a facilitating project manager than a command-control project manager. They might like productivity based metrics than process compliance metrics. I guess thats the reason why a project manager in R&D should not take the usual course of management by tasks.
